Culture
The culture of this time and place can be difficult to understand, just because it seems so much different than today's culture. It seems like instead of focusing on goals and accomplishing something in life, these characters only focused on surviving, because that's all that seemed possible at the time. It makes me realize how much our society has improved over the years, even though there are still many flaws.
The behaviors and attitudes of these characters are so much different than the attitudes and behaviors of today. At the beginning of the book, Celie was depressed. She felt like she had nothing to live for. She knew everyone had power over her and she just kind of excepted it. Most people today would try to gain their own power mostly through violence. It made me learn that it's not necessarily always the people who fight for what they want that are strong. Anyone can put up a fight. But it takes a lot for a person not to do anything about it at all. This makes Celie seem like a smart character, because she wasn't putting herself at Mr. _______'s level.
It's interesting how the characters who do have power abuse it. Mr. ______ clearly had power over Celie, and he could've very well decided not to use it against her; but he did. Same with Sofia. She didn't have to start a fight with anyone who made her angry, but she did because she knew she could. This tells me that power sometimes isn't a good thing to hold, even though it was a value of the people in this time period.
